Rooted in the crossroads of America, Indianapolis based independent artist Kyra Waltz writes and performs music with striking resolve & always straight from the heart. Her songs are singular and exceptional, where each takes you down a separate path to a flickering or fleeting memory or feeling in time; we are brought into Kyra’s world so completely through her voice, instrumentation, and words.
A former student of voice and music education at Saint Mary’s College at Notre Dame, Kyra has always considered herself an avid apprentice and proponent for music, starting at an early age when she would sit by the stairs listening to her mother Kelei teaching voice and piano lessons in their living room. At fourteen, Kyra began her own voyage into musical self-expression, entering, and winning a songwriter grand champion award at the local Hamilton County fair. Though humble beginnings, the opportunity to perform her own music in front of an audience, and feel that organic connection between composition and performance, only further solidified her desire and drive to make music the most integral part of her life, and she has never looked back.
An accomplished pianist and guitarist in her own right, Kyra will tell you her main instrument is her voice, influenced by such powerful female singers as Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, Anita O’Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, among many others. To give back for all the years of formal music education, Kyra teaches private voice lessons, volunteers with the non-profit organization Girls Rock! Indianapolis, and continues to perform with many projects throughout the City, including the Kyra Waltz Duo, swing and gypsy jazz band The Yeager Swing Quartet, and jazz and jazz fusion band Bon Temps.
Kyra has absolutely no plans to slow down and will continue to write and perform, whether it be solo or otherwise.
